Somatic Therapy in Tri Cities, BC

Our bodies often carry experiences long after our minds have tried to move on. Stress, trauma, anxiety, and difficult life experiences can shape the way we respond to the world, sometimes showing up as tension, overwhelm, numbness, or a sense of being stuck.

At Magnolia Counselling & Co, we offer somatic therapy in Port Moody, while often serving the surrounding areas of Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam. Our approach is grounded in connection, clinical integrity, and understanding the ways emotional experiences are held not only in the mind, but also in the body.

A Relational Approach to Somatic Therapy

Many people seek therapy because they feel overwhelmed, disconnected, anxious, or stuck in patterns they struggle to explain. Sometimes insight alone does not create the change they are hoping for. Somatic therapy offers another way of understanding these experiences by paying attention to the body and nervous system alongside thoughts and emotions.

At Magnolia, somatic therapy is integrated within a relational and trauma-informed approach. We explore how stress and experiences may show up physically, whether through tension, shutdown, hypervigilance, restlessness, or other responses that developed as ways of coping or staying safe.

Our goal is that clients leave therapy feeling more connected to themselves, more aware of their internal experiences, and better able to move through life with greater steadiness and ease.

Who Somatic Therapy Is For

Somatic therapy can support many different experiences. You do not need to have experienced significant trauma or have a specific diagnosis to benefit from this approach.

We often work with individuals who:

  • Experience anxiety, overwhelm, or chronic stress
  • Feel disconnected from themselves or their emotions
  • Notice patterns of tension, numbness, or shutting down
  • Have experienced trauma or difficult life events
  • Struggle with emotional regulation or feeling safe in relationships
  • Want to better understand how stress and experiences affect their body and nervous system

Some people come to somatic therapy because traditional talk therapy has not felt like enough. Others are simply curious about a more body-aware approach to healing. All experiences are welcome here.

What Makes Magnolia Counselling & Co. Different

At Magnolia, relationships are at the centre of our work. We are honest, integrous, and highly relational in how we show up with clients.

Our therapists are Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors with graduate training in counselling psychology. While each counsellor brings different areas of expertise, we share a commitment to thoughtful, ethical, and relationally grounded care.

Somatic Therapy at Magnolia is:

Relational and Attachment-based

We understand that emotional experiences often develop within relationships and can be supported through safe, attuned connection.

Trauma-informed and Deeply Human

We recognize how the nervous system responds to stress and difficult experiences, and approach this work carefully and compassionately.

Body-aware and Integrative

Somatic approaches may be combined thoughtfully with modalities such as Internal Family Systems, EMDR, Attachment-based Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

Collaborative and Paced

There is no expectation to move faster than feels manageable. Therapy happens at a pace that supports safety and trust.

Choosing a counsellor is a big decision. We encourage clients to explore our team and find someone whose approach feels like a good fit.

Common Reasons People Seek Somatic Counselling

Every person’s experience is different, but many seek somatic therapy because emotional or physical responses feel difficult to understand or change.

Some of the concerns we commonly support include:

  • Anxiety or chronic stress
  • Feeling overwhelmed or emotionally reactive
  • Persistent tension or nervous system activation
  • Disconnection, numbness, or shutdown responses
  • Trauma or unresolved experiences
  • Difficulty feeling safe or regulated in relationships
  • Patterns of burnout or emotional exhaustion

Rather than focusing only on symptoms, somatic therapy helps explore the deeper experiences and protective responses shaping how you feel.
