Family Counselling in Tri Cities, BC

Families matter deeply. When relationships within a family feel strained, conflicted, or disconnected, it can affect everyone involved. Misunderstandings can build, communication can break down, and it can be hard to know how to move forward together.

At Magnolia Counselling & Co, we offer in-person family counselling in Port Moody, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam. Our approach is grounded in connection, honesty, and clinical integrity. Family counselling is not about placing blame on one person or identifying a problem individual. It is about understanding the patterns, relationships, and emotional dynamics shaping the family system as a whole.

Thoughtful, Relational Approach to Family Counselling

Families often seek counselling during times of stress, transition, or conflict. Parenting challenges, changing family roles, adolescent struggles, separation, grief, or unresolved tensions can shape how family members relate to one another over time. Even families who care deeply about one another can feel stuck in patterns they do not know how to change.

Family counselling offers a space to slow things down and look more closely at what is happening beneath the surface. Rather than focusing only on behaviour or rules, our work is relational and depth-oriented. We pay attention to emotions, attachment needs, nervous system responses, and the experiences each family member brings into the room.

Our hope is that families leave therapy with greater understanding of one another, clearer communication, and a stronger sense of connection and safety within their relationships.

Who Family Counselling Is For

Family counselling can be supportive for many different family structures and at many stages of life. You do not need to be in crisis for family therapy to be helpful.

We often work with families who:

  • Are experiencing ongoing conflict or tension at home
  • Struggle with communication between parents and children or between siblings
  • Are navigating parenting challenges or differences in parenting approaches
  • Are supporting children or teens through emotional or behavioural changes
  • Are adjusting to major life transitions such as separation, blending families, illness, or loss
  • Feel disconnected or unsure how to rebuild trust and understanding

Some families come to therapy with a clear concern they want to address. Others arrive knowing that something does not feel right but are unsure where to begin. All family experiences and structures are welcome here.

What Makes Magnolia Counselling & Co. Different

At Magnolia, relationships are at the centre of our work. We approach family counselling with care, honesty, and a deep respect for the complexity of family systems.

Our clinicians are Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors with graduate training in counselling psychology. While each counsellor brings their own perspective and areas of focus, we share a commitment to thoughtful, ethical, and relationally grounded care for families.

Family counselling at Magnolia is:

Relational and Attachment-based

We focus on how family members connect, respond to one another, and seek safety and belonging within the family system.

Trauma-informed and Deeply Human

We recognize how stress, past experiences, and nervous system responses can shape family dynamics and behaviour.

Clinically Rigorous and Integrative

Our team integrates approaches such as Internal Family Systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy, nervous system–informed interventions, attachment-based family therapies, and other evidence-based models. We thoughtfully tailor these approaches to meet the unique needs of each family.

Collaborative and Non-blaming

We do not take sides or assign fault. We work with families to understand patterns with compassion, curiosity, and clarity.

Choosing a counsellor is an important relational decision. We invite families to explore our team and find a clinician whose approach feels like a good fit.

Common Issues Families Bring to Counselling

Every family is unique, but many experience similar challenges at different points in time.

Some of the concerns we commonly support include:

  • Ongoing family conflict or frequent arguments
  • Communication breakdowns between parents and children or siblings
  • Parenting stress or disagreements around boundaries and expectations
  • Emotional or behavioural changes in children or teens
  • Transitions such as separation, blending families, or changes in family roles
  • Grief, loss, or illness impacting family relationships
  • Feeling disconnected or unsure how to move forward together

Rather than focusing only on surface-level behaviours, we work with families to understand the underlying emotional needs and relational patterns shaping these experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Family issues are often relational in nature, meaning they are shaped by patterns, communication, and emotional dynamics within the family system. Relational and attachment-based approaches are often most helpful, as they focus on understanding and strengthening relationships rather than assigning blame.

There is no set number of sessions. Some families attend for a short period to work through a specific concern, while others benefit from longer-term support. The length of therapy depends on the family’s goals, needs, and circumstances.

Family counselling typically involves meeting together as a family, though individual or parent-only sessions may be included when appropriate. Sessions focus on understanding family dynamics, improving communication, and supporting healthier ways of relating. The process is collaborative and tailored to each family.
