We understand that you may have questions as you navigate your counselling journey and have compiled a list of FAQs below. If the answer(s) to your question(s) are not listed here, please contact us using the contact form or give us a call.
We've noticed there are often misconceptions surrounding counselling, particularly the belief that one must be facing significant challenges or struggles to seek therapeutic support. However, we deeply hold the perspective that counselling is not solely reserved for moments of crisis or distress. Instead, we see it as a valuable tool for personal growth and development that can benefit individuals in various aspects of their lives. Whether it's strengthening relationships, uncovering untapped potential, or working towards specific goals, the process of guided self-reflection can offer invaluable insights and support. By engaging in this journey of self-discovery, individuals have the opportunity to explore their strengths and growing edges, understand their emotions and behaviours more deeply, and ultimately strive towards becoming the best versions of themselves.
Yes, we hold confidentiality in high regard and take it very seriously. Everything you share, at any time, is kept strictly confidential. Yet, there are some exceptions to confidentiality; counsellors are allowed to break confidentiality if...
(1) There is an immediate or imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, there is suspicion or knowledge of harm to a child or otherwise vulnerable person, or our records are subpoenaed by a court of law.
(2) For any reason, you provide written consent (an ROI) allowing confidential information to be shared. This would be appropriate if you ask or permit your therapist to collaborate with other practitioners who are assisting your wellness journey.
It's completely understandable to feel uncertain if you've never experienced counselling before. Don't worry—we've got you covered! If you're unsure if we'd be a good fit, we highly recommend scheduling a complimentary 15-minute consultation with one of our counsellors. This will give you a chance to get a better sense of what it would be like to work with us. If we've already had this consultation, fantastic—we're excited to work with you.
Our primary focus is always on building a strong relationship from the outset. Establishing a safe and trusting rapport with you is paramount to us. We're interested in knowing you beyond the challenges you're facing, connecting with you on a human to human level.
During our first session, your counsellor might guide you through what to expect from counselling and from them as your counsellor, particularly in how we can help address what you may be coming in with. Many people wonder if they need to disclose everything right away, but that's not necessary. You're welcome to share what you're comfortable with, and your counsellor will approach you with gentle curiosity and exploration.
One of the beautiful aspects of the therapeutic journey is that things unfold over time. With a trauma-informed approach, our priority is ensuring your safety and building trust every step of the way.
RCCs are Registered Clinical Counsellors and Psychotherapists who are registered to practice counselling and psychotherapy through the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). CCCs are Canadian Certified Counsellors who can register throughout Canada to practice counselling through the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association. RCCs and CCCs both have a master's or doctorate degree in Counselling or Clinical Psychology, or related discipline, and are highly-trained professionals with educational and clinical experiences to provide legitimate and ethical care.
Seeking a qualified professional is very important on your journey toward wellness. Though counselling and psychotherapy is likely moving towards regulation in the province of British Columbia, it is currently not a regulated health profession yet in the province of British Columbia which means that anyone can claim to be a counsellor, psychotherapist or therapist with no repercussions. This includes individuals who do not have graduate level training in a related discipline.
Most health insurance/extended medical benefit plans partially or fully cover health-care or paramedical practitioners like RCCs or CCCs. If you are unsure what your coverage entails, please contact your workplace or your insurer to clarify what kind of coverage you have. In many cases, policies will also cover your children if they are under the age of 25. Please note that we do not do direct billing, however we will provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurer for full or partial reimbursement.
We understand that things come up, and you might need to change or cancel your counselling session. If you can't make it to a session, please let us know as soon as you can. This way, we can offer the slot to someone else who needs it.
Please note that we have a policy requiring at least 48 hours' notice for any changes or cancellations. If you cancel or change your appointment within 48 hours, you'll be charged the full session fee. You can reschedule your appointments as needed, as long as you do it more than 48 hours in advance. We will consider special situations on a case-by-case basis.
Thank you for your understanding.
